Rotterdam is a city of bold buildings and open river views. This one-day route starts where the local stories are, climbs above the city for lunch, then crosses to the waterfront for a drink before the train home.
Start at the Markthal’s main entrance, close to Blaak station, for Free Walking Tour Rotterdam. In about two hours, a local guide will introduce the city’s history, architecture and daily life. Reserve a morning place and arrive a little early.

You will finish back at the Markthal, so there is time to look up at its enormous painted ceiling and see the Cube Houses nearby. Ask your guide for a favourite local stop before you part ways. The tour is tip based.
Next, head to Museumpark and the mirrored Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen. Take the lift to Restaurant Renilde on the sixth floor for lunch above the rooftops. After a morning on foot, the view is a good reason to linger.
You do not need a ticket for the Depot collection to eat at Renilde; ask at the entrance desk. Lunch is currently offered Tuesday to Sunday, but check the latest hours and book a table for your visit.

After lunch, take a taxi to Hotel New York on the Wilhelminapier. Once the headquarters of the Holland America Line, it is a reminder of Rotterdam’s long connection with transatlantic travel. Pause outside for the river, the former harbour setting and the modern towers across the water.

If you would rather arrive by water, a water taxi can take you to Hotel New York. Check its stops and arrange the crossing before setting out.
From Hotel New York, stroll along the pier to Foodhallen Rotterdam at Wilhelminakade 52. Find a table, order a beer and stay for a bite if you are hungry. It is an easy, informal last stop before heading home.
Tip: Foodhallen and Hotel New York are two separate stops on the same pier, a short walk from each other.

Walk to Wilhelminaplein for the tram back to Rotterdam Centraal. Tram 3 is usually a direct choice, and the metro is another option. Check RET’s journey planner on the day for the current service.
