Winter season in Vilnius

The Climate: Lithuanian winters are known for their unique character and can be remarkably unpredictable. Winter might arrive as early as late October or extend into April, making it difficult to say exactly when the coldest season will come and go. While temperatures can occasionally plunge to a frigid -25°C, this is rare. In recent years, winters in Vilnius have been milder, with average temperatures generally settling around 0°C.

Even so, Vilnius in winter has its own quiet magic. Though snow is less frequent, when it does fall, it blankets the city in a serene, white wonderland. Visitors may also be treated to a few bright, sunny days, where the winter light enhances the beauty of the historic buildings and cobblestone streets. Whether softly blanketed in snow or framed by clear winter skies, Vilnius offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere for travelers during the colder months.

What to wear? If you’re planning a winter visit to Vilnius, a cozy, warm coat and a good pair of waterproof winter shoes are essential for staying comfortable in the chilly weather. Other important winter accessories, such as gloves, hats, and scarves, can easily be found in souvenir shops throughout Vilnius Old Town or at the charming Christmas markets that make the city feel especially cozy and beautiful at this time of year.

Can I still do walking tours? The Vilnius with Locals team runs walking tours every single day, rain or shine! You can join the Free Vilnius Walking Tour daily at 11 am., departing from Town Hall. Worried it might be too cold? It all comes down to dressing warmly and having the right mindset! To make things easier, winter tours are often a bit shorter and include some indoor stops for warming up, making the experience comfortable and enjoyable for most people.
