Free Walking Tour Budapest

Enjoy a free walking tour with the TriptoBudapest - Free walking tours team in the Hungarian capital!

Free Budapest Walking Tour

TriptoBudapest - Free Budapest Walking Tours’ was created in the Hungarian capital city by knowledgeable and fun-loving, licensed, professional local tour guides that have a great passion for showing their home and culture to travelers. We have been offering a great variety of free walking tours (and private tours as well) since 2008. TriptoBudapest was the first to offer free walking tours in the city and has the longest running public free tours.

If you are a first-timer in Budapest, it is best to start with our free General Budapest Walk which gives you a great introduction to history and culture, and if you are hungry for more details, you can always come back to take one of our thematic free walking tours. We offer a Communism walk, a Jewish quarter tour, a Street & Urban art tour and an Evening walk in the heart of Pest. The starting times are conveniently spread throughout the whole day and our meeting point is always the same, the very central Elisabeth square on the Pest side of the city. Look for our guides wearing royal blue uniforms and holding a blue Free tour flag!

Our tours give our guests a broad view of the key places and areas of interest in a comprehensive, informative and entertaining way. We really appreciate how important your Trip to Budapest is to you, and we know that through our enthusiasm and knowledge of the city we can help ensure you have a great time. Join as a Traveler, leave as a Friend!

We went on the free walking tour of the city and had an excellent experience. It was a super hot day, so our guide was careful to keep us all in the shade as much as possible. He was a fun, engaging and knowledgeable guide! The tourist trap tips at the end were an appreciated bonus. Would highly recommend this tour to get to know Budapest better at the start of your trip.

We always had the general Budapest Walking Tour on our itinerary to do at 10.30 on Saturday morning which we enjoyed so much that we returned to do the Communism walk the following day. Both tours would be highly recommended, there is no substitute for getting information directly from locals.

During my stay in Budapest, I participated in 3 guided tours with this company: the Budapest Walk, the Communism Walk and the Jewish Quarter Walk. All 3 were really amazing!!! The guides were dynamic, fun and interesting at the same time so they made me learn a lot of things about the city! Thank you for the great experience!

Frequently asked questions about the tour

Do I need a booking to join the free walking tours?

Yes, you need a booking to join the free walking tours. Without a booking, we won't know if we can expect you and won't be able to contact you in case of any schedule changes. Booking is simple: just click "View Schedule," fill in the form, and you will receive an email summary.

How do I find the meeting point?

All tours leave from Elisabeth (Erzsébet) square (address: 1051 Budapest, Erzsébet tér) We meet about 20 meters away from the big white Ferris wheel, in the shady park. Our guides wear royal blue uniforms and at least one of them holds up a blue free tour flag.

How far do we walk on the free walking tours and do we end where we started?

General Budapest sightseeing walks cover about two and a half miles (i.e.about 3.5 kilometres if you think metrically). It is an easy walk, but there is an ~8 minute uphill walk to the Castle District. The tour goes at a moderate pace for the average walker. There is a possibility to use the public bus instead of the uphill walk and meet the group on the top of the Castle hill again. Please bring a single ticket or a day card if you plan to use the public bus. Jewish Quarter, Communism, Street & Urban Art, Evening walking tours: each covers about one and a half mile (i.e. about 2,5 kilometres). They are not hard walks, flat places only. We go at a gentle pace. The tours end at a different spot than the meeting point, but not too far from it. Our guides are happy to give you instructions about how to get where you want after the tours.

What if the weather is not good/it is raining?

Free Budapest Walking Tours are held rain or shine. Please make sure you have weatherproof clothing, good shoes for walking, an umbrella etc. with you. If needed, we do some route adjustments to accommodate poor weather conditions.

How are the tours free?

Free tours have no fixed prices; they are based on a name-your-own-price system. You have the possibility of paying any price you wish, even nothing, for our tours. The choice to remunerate the tour guide is 100% voluntary. We are confident in the quality of our walking tours and confident that you will be sufficiently satisfied with your experience and you will feel you want to tip your tour guide.
