Free Melbourne Walking Tour

G’day mate!

We are your local guides at I’m Free Walking Tours. We’re your complete connection to Sydney and Melbourne’s sights, culture and history. As Melburnians, we will share with you the stories and history of our hometown. We’ll explore with you parts of the city many locals don’t know and laneways you might miss.

Did you know that Melbourne was once the richest city in the world?

To help you have the best time in our city, we will provide you with 100% independent advice on what to see and do.

Operating in Melbourne since 2011, we believe in helping to make sure you get the most out of your time in Melbourne, and also giving back to our community. To help our community we give 5% of all profits from our tours to a local charity chosen by your guides.

Head to our website to register for tours of Melbourne’s sights and the Culture Capital tour which delves into more laneways and stories about how Melbourne became so famous for its culture.

We had a great experience with Lenny! We had our two kids with us on the tour and he was patient and willing to work around their needs. The tour was full of interesting information and was fun! We loved our experience. Highly recommend!
Tara
100% would recommend. Sam is very knowledgeable. A local tour is always a great insight. Sam was very helpful, approachable and had a great sense of humour with his delivery. Sam took his time to speak to everyone on the tour and was very welcoming. Thanks Sam for the great tips and hints in the city!
Viktor
Hopped on the free tour with Tom as a guide. He was really knowledgeable and informative throughout the way. He was fun and you could see he's very passionate about Melbourne and what he was doing. Highly recommend it!

Frequently asked questions about the tour

What is the difference between the Melbourne Sights and Culture Capital Tour? Which one should I do?

The two start in the same place but cover different parts of the city. If you’re short on time and can only join one: The Melbourne Sights tour gives an in depth introduction to Melbourne, it’s stories and everything you need to know to have the best experience in Melbourne. The Culture Capital tour helps you get in touch with the unique culture of Melbourne, what makes Melbourne such a great place to live and how this has evolved.

Do I need to book an I’m Free Tour of Melbourne?

Yes, currently we require bookings and a phone number to maintain group sizing and enable contact tracing in the unlikely event it is necessary.

Where does the tour start and how do I find my I’m Free tour guide?

Your guide will meet you at the start point wearing a bright green “I’m Free” T-shirt. Both the Melbourne Sights and Culture Capital tour start from the State Library Victoria. On Swanston St near the statue of Sir Redmond Barry.

Is the tour ever cancelled?

We walk in any weather, rain, hail or shine. During the pandemic, we may have to cancel if your guide is feeling unwell and we are unable to replace them at the last minute. Equally, if you are feeling unwell, please let us know and we’ll happily reschedule your booking to another time when you’re feeling better.

Are your tours accessible for wheelchairs and prams?

Our Melbourne Sights and Culture Capital tours are both fully accessible.
