Discover Oslo with Oslo Free Tour – Your Guide to the Heart of the City

At Oslo Free Tour, we’re a passionate team who live and breathe this incredible city. Our group of experienced guides, each with unique backgrounds and perspectives, came together to create something truly special—a free walking tour designed to show you the Oslo we love. Our goal is simple: to share Oslo’s rich history, vibrant culture, and hidden gems with visitors from around the world. Whether you’re here for a short stay or an extended trip, we aim to provide you with insights that only a local could offer. Join us and experience Oslo through the eyes of engaging storytellers!

On the day of the tour, we'll meet at the Tiger statue in front of Oslo Central Train Station. Here, your guide will greet you and introduce you to the story behind Oslo’s famous nickname, "Tiger City." From there, we’ll begin our adventure at the Oslo Opera House, an architectural marvel and home to the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet.
Next, our route continues through the heart of the city to Oslo Børs, Norway's only regulated stock exchange, which plays a key role in the country's economy. Then we head to Christiania Square, where you'll encounter Christian IV's Glove—a unique monument with an intriguing backstory that we’ll reveal on the day!

Our journey then takes us to the historic Akershus Fortress, a 13th-century medieval castle that has served as a royal residence, military base, and even as a temporary office for Norway’s Prime Minister. We’ll see Aker Brygge and the Nobel Peace Center, a highlight that showcases the global ideals represented by the Nobel Peace Prize, the only Nobel Prize awarded in Norway. Aker Brygge’s lively harborfront is the blend of old warehouses and modern architecture that makes this district so distinctive.

As we make our way further, we'll stop by some of Oslo’s most iconic buildings, including Oslo City Hall, home of the annual Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, the National Theatre, main building of University of Oslo, and the Royal Palace, each with its own distinct history and architectural style.

As our 90-minute journey draws to a close, we'll stroll along Karl Johan’s Gate—Oslo's main pedestrian street—and stop to admire the Storting building, home to Norway’s Parliament. With every stop, our knowledgeable guides share engaging stories that bring these sites to life, making this tour more than a walk—it’s a deep dive into the spirit of Oslo.

Rating: 5 out of 5
Highly recommend: interesting, informative and enjoyable. Liked Jelena a lot, learned a bit about Norwegian culture and history, and the info was delivered with jokes, personal stories and legends, so was pleasant to listen. Also we've visited most popular attractions in the center and got lots of recommendations where to continue our journey on our own. 100% worth it, advise to take it on your first day.

Zoe was outstanding! One of her colleagues cancelled so she combined 2 tours and managed to keep us all engaged and well informed during the 2 hour tour. She was extremely knowledgable about all sites, delivered the information on sites with detail and occasional humor, and fielded all sorts of questions from the participants. We could not have asked for a better tour guide! Thank you, Zoe!

This was a great overview of some of the must see sights in Oslo! Although it was pouring rain during our walk, we had a great experience with Zoe. She was knowledgeable and engaging, and gave us a good foundation for our later exploration of the city. I was a little skeptical about a basically free tour, but was very pleasantly surprised. Highly recommend Zoe and this experience.

Frequently asked questions about the tour

What is the Oslo Free Walking Tour, and how does it work?

The Oslo Free Walking Tour is a guided tour led by local experts passionate about Oslo’s history, culture, and vibrant atmosphere. It’s called a “free” tour because there’s no upfront fee to join; instead, we work on a tip-based model where participants are encouraged to contribute at the end, depending on what they feel the experience was worth. This system allows us to make our tour accessible to everyone while ensuring our guides have a strong incentive to provide a memorable experience. All our guides are equipped with a card reader, so don’t worry about having cash on you – you don’t really need it in the Nordics.

How long is the tour, and what landmarks will we visit?

The tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and covers many of Oslo’s most iconic sites and some lesser-known gems. We’ll start at the famous Tiger statue by the Oslo Central Train Station, where we’ll introduce you to the story behind Oslo’s nickname, “Tiger City.” From there, highlights include the stunning Oslo Opera House, the Oslo Børs (stock exchange), Christiania Square, Akershus Fortress, Aker Brygge, and the Nobel Peace Center. As we stroll, you’ll also see the Oslo City Hall, National Theatre, Royal Palace, and the historic Storting building, home to Norway’s Parliament. Each stop includes stories and facts that provide a deeper understanding of Oslo’s unique character.

Where and when does the tour start, and how do I find the guide?

The tour begins at the Tiger statue in front of Oslo Central Train Station, where your guide will be waiting 5-10 minutes before the scheduled start time. Look for a guide holding a sign that reads “CITY WALKING TOUR OSLO” to easily locate us. We ask that participants arrive a few minutes early so we can begin on time. The tour runs regardless of weather, so please dress appropriately for Oslo’s climate, whether it’s sunny, rainy, or snowy!

Do I need to make a reservation for the tour, or can I just show up?

To ensure the best experience for everyone, we recommend making a reservation through our website. Reservations help us manage group sizes and allow us to give each participant the attention they deserve. However, if you happen to be in Oslo and want to join on short notice, you’re welcome to check availability at the meeting point. During peak tourist season, tours can fill up quickly, so booking in advance is the best way to secure your spot.

Is the tour suitable for all ages and fitness levels?

Absolutely! Our tour is designed to be enjoyable and accessible for everyone, from families with young children to solo travelers, groups of friends, and older adults. The route is mostly flat and follows pedestrian-friendly paths, making it easy for people of various fitness levels to join, including wheelchairs.

What should I bring on the tour?

We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and dressing according to the weather. Oslo’s weather can be unpredictable, so having an umbrella, jacket, or hat on hand is always a good idea. A bottle of water is also helpful, especially in the warmer months.

Why choose the Oslo Free Walking Tour?

By choosing our tour, you’re not only gaining valuable insight into Oslo’s history and culture but also supporting a local business passionate about sharing Oslo’s stories. Our guides are local experts who genuinely enjoy meeting new people and sharing their city.
