Take a free tour with Free Walking Tour Utrecht!

Free Utrecht Walking Tour

Utrecht is one of the hidden gems of the Netherlands, only 20 minutes away from Amsterdam. A great escape from the tourist brawl, into a quintessentially Dutch town with a great story.

Utrecht has a surprisingly rich history that goes back more than 2,000 years. A small and cozy city center with lots of alleys and hidden streets makes it perfect for a walking tour. With an intricate and often car-free street plan, the Free Walking Tour Utrecht visits places where bus and boat tours can’t reach.

What makes our free tour great, is that it’s not just a history class. The story is told from a truly local perspective, with a Dutch guide telling you how life in Utrecht is. Find out where the Utrechters wine & dine, where to shop and what tourist traps to avoid. No need to take a guide book, just join a Free Walking Tour Utrecht!

So book your spot and discover the city with a local friend!

The tour was educational and fun. Our guide, Froukje, was very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend this walking tour to anyone visiting Utrecht. And anyone living in Utrecht who hasn't done it before.

A walking tour is usually not my go-to activity on a rainy Saturday morning, but exploring my favourite Dutch city while listening to offbeat stories and fascinating tales turned out to be a wonderful experience! The tour was fun and felt authentic—all thanks to our kind and engaging guide, Froukje. Will always recommend!

Frequently asked questions about the tour

Where does the tour start?

Free Walking Tour Utrecht starts at the Dom tower. The iconic landmark can be seen from all around the city, which is why it is the perfect starting for our tour. Find it through its address location: Domplein 21, 3512 JC, Utrecht. The guide will be there 15 minutes before the start of the tour, with a white umbrella. There is a small statue of liberty (a woman holding a flame) before the tower where we await you, please make sure to be on time!

How long is the tour?

The Free Walking Tour Utrecht takes about 2 hours, one hour of walking and one hour of talking. We walk approximately 4,5 km (2 miles) and the whole tour is wheelchair and stroller accessible.

What do we see in the tour?

The tour starts at Domplein, where there is already enough to be seen to fill an hour of stories. Since it is a walking tour, we won’t stick around too long (so check out the square before or after the tour)! We go to: - Pandhof, beautiful courtyard - Paus Adriaan, the only Dutch pope ever - Neude - Cafe Olivier - Miffy (Nijntje) ...and a lot more! Your newly-made local friend will guide you from the city highlights through secret pathways and along the old Dutch architecture.

Is the tour really free?

The Free Walking Tour Utrecht lives up to its name as a free tour, however a tip is appreciated. We are not funded by the government and are entirely dependent on your tips. We strive to give a tour so great, that it is unnecessary to charge beforehand and are happy to receive whatever you think the tour is worth. In this way everyone can join, no matter your budget.

Do you need to book a tour?

Yes please! We walk with relatively small groups and call in an extra guide when the number adds up. In this way, we can keep the quality of the tour high and keep it interactive. Secure your spot and book via our website. If the tour is full and you don’t have a booking, check out whether there are available spots for tours on the same or next day.
