Free Walking Tour Mostar

Traverse 600 years of history with Sheva’s Free Walking Tour of Mostar!

Free Mostar Walking Tour

Sheva Walking Tours is an independent, locally owned tour company based in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The company was developed to fill what we recognized as a gap in the content of and approach to the tours available in Mostar. We created tours that are well-researched and draw upon the landscape as well as our own personal experience and knowledge to help tell Mostar’s story. Our tours make a point to include Mostar’s more recent history, discussing the Yugoslav period, the wars of the 1990s, and current socio-political situation. Our narratives are not scripted, and each of our tour guides offers a unique perspective on Mostar; however, we do NOT support the spread of political propaganda and misinformation. Although tours are shaped by personal experience, we strive for a balanced account of our city and country’s past and present while dispelling misunderstandings and stereotypes.

Sheva Walking Tours offers free, tip-based tours as well as private tours and custom experiences. Our goal is to ensure that a quality, impactful experience is accessible to ALL travellers. Sheva’s Original Free Walking Tour of Mostar is our most popular walking tour. We are one of few tourism agencies that operate all year round and will provide a free tour to a single guest. Why? Although our company is our livelihood, we are also dedicated to educating international and regional visitors through an engaging and entertaining immersive tour experience.

One of our favourite aspects of Sheva’s Free Walking Tour of Mostar is that it brings together a diverse group of people that otherwise would not have the opportunity to meet. Guests bring their own experiences to the tour with them and because we welcome questions, a tour can also grow into a dynamic conversation. We hope you join our conversation. Walk with us for an unforgettable experience. Learn our history, come to understand our present, and immerse yourself in the local perspective. Along the way, we will share the best of what Mostar and its surroundings have to offer, giving you insider advice and tips so that you can get the most of your visit and make memories that will make you want to return to our beautiful hometown!

What visitors think about Free Mostar Walking Tour?

Free Walking Tour of Mostar
Rating: 5 out of 5
The tour was comprehensive and took us to both cultural and historical sites, with an emphasis on the war that held the town captive in the 90s. He linked the historical facts with personal stories in the most impartial way possible given the divisive history of the town. Despite the serious nature of some elements of the tour, Sheva included some light-hearted commentary and humour to ensure it was as enjoyable as possible. Given it was free (tip-based), I'd recommend this tour to anyone coming to Mostar. It is a must to capture the history of not only the town, but the greater Balkan region. Chris103M
Great tour!
Rating: 5 out of 5
As experienced backpackers we've done many a free walking tour, but Sheva's was one of the most informative and emotionally charged tours we've taken to date. Not only is he very well informed and the rich and complex history of Bosnia and Mostar, he is able to offer up his personal experiences and anecdotes from the war. I would recommend doing this tour before anything else, because it gives you a whole new appreciation for the architecture and history of the city. Not to mention plenty of great recommendations for food! Beontheroadlong
The best walking tour in Europe.
Rating: 5 out of 5
I have been traveling Europe for just about three months now and have not been on a walking tour, whether free or paid, as good as Sheva’s. His passion for Mostar and its history is evident. Sheva lived through some of Mostar’s most intense history and has plenty of stories and knowledge to share. I unfortunately only had time for one day in Mostar but Sheva’s tour made me feel I saw the best of the best of the city. He is very informative and made the tour very fun. You are missing out if you do not take a tour with Sheva!! kelseygwalton

Frequently asked questions about the tour

Why choose Sheva’s Free Walking Tour of Mostar?

Sheva Walking Tours is a local independent tour company. Our guides are certified and trained, but our tours are unscripted and do not avoid any of the more difficult history associated with Mostar and the wider Balkan region. We blend rigorous historic fact with local tradition and personal experience making our tours educational, engaging, and entertaining. We share and discuss Mostar’s more recent history and current socio-political context with our guests in hopes of dispelling misconceptions and stereotypes about the region and its people. Unlike other tour companies, we welcome even the most difficult questions and will answer with our own local perspective.

What information does Sheva’s Free Walking Tour of Mostar include?

Sheva’s Free Walking Tour of Mostar is the most comprehensive tour in Mostar. Our tour begins in the heart of the Old Town, a celebrated UNESCO World Heritage Site. As we continue on our path we move beyond the historic core to explore the areas of Mostar representative of our more recent 20th century history and showcasing the Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslav periods. Continuing on, we come to the front line of the wars of the 1990s and discuss the violent conflict which engulfed Mostar and the surrounding region with the dissolution of Yugoslavia. As we circle back around toward the Old Town, we come to present day and an explanation of our current socio-political situation. Along our unique route, these are some of the many sites you will experience: Tabhana, Kriva Cuprija, Kujundziluk, Coppersmith Workshop, Old Bridge, Mausoleum of Osman Dikic, Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque, Bulevar, Bunur Bridge, and more.

I am going to be traveling near Mostar. Is it worth visiting and for how long?

Because Mostar is near to other tourist destinations such as Dubrovnik or Sarajevo, people often visit Mostar on a day trip. When we speak with these guests, they all say one thing: we wish we stayed here longer, but we hope to return. Others we have met on tour planned to stay in Mostar for only two or three days, but remained an entire week! When planning your trip to the region, we strongly recommend that you spend a few days in Mostar! Start with Sheva’s Free Walking Tour of Mostar to get your bearings. All of our insider tips will help ensure a memorable visit. Mostar is an ideal base from which to explore Herzegovina. Spend a day or two visiting the historic towns of Blagaj, Počitelj, and Stolac, visit nearby vineyards, or explore the natural beauty of Ruište and Hutovo Blato. Upon returning to Mostar in the evening, you will be able to enjoy the narrow cobblestones streets without the crowds and get the best seat overlooking the Neretva River at a local restaurant.

When is the best time to visit Mostar and the country as a whole?

Traditionally, the “tourist season” in Mostar is between May and August. During these months, Mostar will host more organized events including concerts and the annual traditional bridge diving competition. The summer temperatures make swimming and other water activities inviting. The “shoulder season” of March – April and September – November are becoming more and more appealing to many travellers. These months generally have good weather and fewer visitors; the spring and autumn seasons offer beauty of their own. Winter may not be for everyone; however, if you would like to have the historic districts to yourself, prefer winter activities such as skiing, and drinking hot mugs of mulled wine, winter is the time to come.

Is Sheva’s Free Walking Tour of Mostar for everyone?

We think so! We love the diversity of our free walking tour groups. In fact, one aspect of Free Tours that we appreciate the most is that they bring people together who would otherwise never cross paths. Our participants have ranged in age from newborn to octogenarian. Solo travellers, couples, groups, families, and organizations have walked with us, and in some cases dogs have joined the fun. While we do explain and discuss the wars that Mostar and the surrounding region experienced during the 1990s, we do not feel any of this information prevents participation. We have received a lot of positive feedback from parents and guardians who said that Sheva’s Free Walking Tour of Mostar engaged their children and provided a fantastic learning experience. We agree – exploring the landscape and the stories it represents offers an incredible way to immerse yourself in the past and another’s present. As always, if you have any concerns, feel free to reach out to us directly.

I have mobility limitations. Is it possible to participate in Sheva’s Free Walking Tour of Mostar?

Unfortunately, Mostar – especially in the Old Town – can be difficult to traverse, especially for those with mobility concerns. The narrow streets are cobbled and can be slippery. While a stroller is manageable, standard wheelchairs are not recommended. Sheva Walking Tours strives to include everyone on our tours. If you have concerns about mobility, let us know. If a traditional Free Walking Tour of Mostar is not possible for you or your group, we can work with you to provide a custom experience or will sit down with you at a local café to enjoy a coffee and conversation!

Is there a dress code that I should follow while participating?

No, there is no dress code on Sheva’s Free Walking Tour of Mostar; while in Mostar you will likely see a range of attire, from those wearing bathing suits on the banks of the Neretva River to more conservative attire. While the tour does visit the courtyard of a mosque, the group will not enter the actual building. Wear whatever is most comfortable for you! During the summer, temperatures in Mostar can be extremely hot. We recommend wearing loose, light, and comfortable clothing. A reusable water bottle or canteen is very useful; these can be filled at water fountains found throughout Mostar. Although winters are relatively mild due to Mostar’s proximity to the coast, it can be wet and blustery. Wear layers and bring along a rain jacket. Sheva’s Free Walking Tour of Mostar covers a lot of ground, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes!

What are the options for tipping? Do you only take the local currency of Konvertible Marks?

Konvertible Marks (or KM) are the local currency. KM are tied to the Euro and the general rate of exchange is 2 KM:1 Euro. While the use of local currency is appreciated, vendors in the Old Town generally accept KM, Euros, Croatian Kuna, and American Dollars. This is slowly changing as tourism policy in Bosnia and Herzegovina becomes more formal. At this time, Sheva Walking Tours will accept these currencies. Alternatively, we can accept tips through our Paypal Account: paypal.me/shevatours. At the time of writing, currency exchange for the most frequently used currencies in Mostar is the following: 20 KM: 10 Euros: 75 Kuna: 12 USD.

Does Sheva Walking Tours have more than one Free Walking Tour from which to choose?

Currently, Sheva’s Original Free Walking Tour of Mostar is the only tip-based tour that Sheva Walking Tours schedules daily. We are in the process of developing a second “Alternative Free Walking Tour of Mostar” focusing on Mostar’s monuments, memorials, and street art. We will add this tour to our schedule soon!
